Two Articles on Willimantic History by Tom Beardsley

The Association for the Study of Connecticut History has just published the Fall, 2003 issue of Connecticut History. This special edition dedicated to Willimantic, features five articles plus historic pictures of the American Thread mills and the old Spector House in the Oaks (Dr. Mason's Hospital).
The first article features a contextual history of Willimantic penned by Tom Beardsley. This is followed by a Kenneth Ames' essay on the splendid Spector House, originally built by mill agent William Barrows in 1880. The journal's third article, written by Robert Wolff, features Civil War editorials taken from the Willimantic Journal and the Windham Transcript. Next follows a series of absorbing oral histories in which American Thread millworkers discuss their live and work in the Thread City. These have been edited and collected by Tom Beardsley and Robert Asher. Finally, Sally Milius has written an interesting history of Windham Hospital's Pre-Natal Clinic.
